Wish For More Wishes. Matthew Sudlow Matthew Sudlow

This piece was inspired by bonsai artist Ryan Neil's most recent styling of the renowned Hatanaka family tree. Please visit Ryan's website at live.bonsaimirai.com

Cire Perdue, Limited Edition of 10 (Tree: Three Castings)

If at first you do succeed, then still keep trying! Wish For More Wishes has been an experiment in upping the ante. There was no better species for this purpose than a juniper when sculpted in the classical Literati style. This style of bonsai has a long and rich history and offers beautifully articulated expression and refined elegance. The species that inspired the piece, Rocky Mountain Juniper (Juniperus Scopulorum) provided me with all of the natural characteristics to create a realistic portrayal of a lovely, wandering tree.

From a technical standpoint and the perspective of a mold-maker, this casting would be a nightmare. Fingers Crossed proved to me that my mold design and casting technique worked, but this sculpture would prove to me just how far the mold design could go. This is why Wish For More Wishes is really more of a visual journey. The reward for completing the journey (successful casting), was that few tree species for future sculptures would remain out of my reach.

So, everything begins upon the rock and it represents to me, the hard and unforgiving nature of reality. A reality that with any luck, can be left behind, so long as we dare to lift our eyes to the clouds above. Keeping with a traditional shape, I decided to make my own version of a drum style bonsai pot which is most often matched with Literati style. This subtle departure was an expression my own unique perspective. I labored over this choice, because the simplistic styling of a traditional drum style pot ranks as one of my favorites. Following the tree as it rises from the pot, it meanders far and to one side. The trunk is thin but not weak, and there is a stretch of deadwood (Shari) along the way, which for me carries important symbolism. An adventurous path is always a delicate dance with failure.

Finally, we reach the turning point or as Frost would offer, the “two roads”. In one direction, a shriveled and dead branch (Jin) while the other springs forth with excitement and vitality. The journey seems to almost come around full-circle. I like to think that this concept is truly universal. It certainly is very philosophically pleasing, even if Big Bounce Theory is fringe these days. Standing back and looking at the tree, it reminds me of a Genie billowing out of a lamp. I must admit, the tree has indeed granted me many more wishes.
